A Birthday, Some Baseball, and a Book
Today, Timber turned a lively eight years old. Well, at least he is lively this morning. Last night he and Monty got pre-celebratory rawhide bones. Timber immediately consumed his, while Monty found a nice hiding place somewhere in my office for his. Unbeknownst to myself or to Monty, Timber sniffed out the hidden bone this morning. I walked in on the final throes of the experience. Now Monty is looking for his bone and asking me what I did with it. Like a sphinx that can't quite keep his eyes open, Timber is now eagerly awaiting my peanut-butter-toast plate. You know those little crumbs might just top him off this morning.
Timber's birthday trip to PetSmart, where he will pick out treats and be loved by everyone, may have to happen tomorrow. While we are crossing our fingers that it'll be done today, Keith's car has been in the shop with an issue that requires replacement of the thermostat and the water pump. The impact on Tim-Day is that we have no vehicle to go to PetSmart in. Perhaps he won't be too upset with one day's delay.
And the reason we probably won't be able to go tonight is that...after living here for two years...we are finally going to a Texas Rangers baseball game tonight. Keith's company has rented a box and is treating the employees to a night at the park. While I am no fan of the American League, I do love the energy and excitement of going to a baseball game. And though I care naught for the Rangers (can I get away with saying that here?) or the A's, I am ready for some baseball.
This morning I finished re-reading one of my favorite motivational and inspirational writing books, Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg. When anyone says to me that they are interested in writing, especially if making time or finding motivation are an issue, it is one of the few books that I recommend they read (another is Anne Lamott's book Bird by Bird). Though I have never accomplished her feat, Goldberg makes me want to write so much that I fill a full notebook each month. She creates in me a desire to always be a writer, even when I'm not physically in the act of writing. She also has an incredible ability to encourage others to pursue their craft and practice, practice, practice.
